About STANZA

STANZA is an artist who deals with net art, multimedia, electronic music and painting. Most of his work can be viewed from www.stanza.co.uk. STANZA studied at Goldsmiths and Central Saint Martins in London.

The work has gained an international reputation for net specific artworks and number of these interactive audio visual online net artworks have been exhibited internationally and have won net art specific awards, including the Links first prize Porto 2001, Videobrasil 2001 first prize, Cynet art 2000 first prize, Dresden [all prizes given to my online internet artwork the central city www.thecentralcity.co.uk]. Most recent exhibitions include São Paulo Biennale on the theme of metropolis in Brazil and Zeppelin in Barcelona.

In the last twelve months STANZA has been to Holland, Germany, Spain, Denmark, London, Slovenia, Austria, Ireland, Turkey, Portugal and Brazil, presenting his net art and giving lectures and workshops.

This main STANZA site features lots of work including, the internet art project, The Central City as well as lots of soundtoys, interactive movies, gallery of fine art. The intention is to make an interesting, interactive, multimedia website, with sounds, pictures, and artworks. The site also contains multimedia work and electronic music; cd players are built into the site so that you can listen to my music as you browse. You can navigate around from each of the cells on the home page and you can go to to various experimental interactive audio visual pieces. Also online are paintings, photos and conceptual pieces from 1984 when at Goldsmiths', to the present day. Within the site are generative areas, areas where you can mix sounds, interact with images, there is a jukebox on the stanza main site and a karaoke machine in the central city area.

STANZA is interested in an 'industrial culture' of surveillance, control and repression: brutal, monochrome, low-definition architectural perspectives, street-plan grids, high rise elevations defaced by heavy imprints, and grainy, propagandist collages. The emphasis is of the emancipation promised by the new media.

STANZA is concerned more with the way images are formed and transformed than with content, more concerned with the copy than the original. Increasingly unidentifiable, mutilated grids are copied, degraded, reproduced on plexi glass screens or mirror.

The net artworks are heading onto plasma screens and into art galleries. Selected works have been made as installations and I now have offers of exhibitions in the USA and Israel. I am getting more inquiries from curators of art galleries. My work in São Paulo Biennale, and forthcoming shows for 2002 include events in Spain, Australia, Holland and the USA.

Most of my time at the moment is spent making works for the web. This time is spent addressing the issues around net art and the protocols of the net as a medium. This means I am interested net specific works, designed for the Internet, that will use elements of html, javascript, and could also incorporate flash, shockwave and java. Net art is such a new art forms the aesthetics a still evolving. Net art is global, interactive communication.

Projects include subvergence, which subverts and fragments the notion of our old browser. Instead we have full screen desktop takeover. "Transportron" which includes generative audio and image environments built into three d spaces. "The Central City", is an audio visual, interactive, internet art experience, all made for the internet. The city becomes an organic network of grids and diagrams, juxtaposing urban sounds and sights. "Amorphoscapes", is a whole site dedicated to new digital interactive paintings.
