The workshop will begin with a newcommer orientation on Sunday night 7-October and will conclude early afternoon Wednesday 10-October. A preliminary agenda is available, and registration and logistics information will be posted by August 15.
The Global Grid Forum (GGF) is a community-initiated forum of individual researchers and practitioners working on distributed computing, or "grid" technologies. GGF is the result of a merger of the Grid Forum, the eGrid European Grid Forum, and the Grid community in Asia-Pacific. These initial forum efforts included five major workshops in the US in 1999 and 2000 and two in Europe during 2000.
GGF focuses on the promotion and development of Grid technologies and applications via the development and documentation of "best practices," implementation guidelines, and standards with an emphasis on rough consensus and running code. GGF participants come from over 200 organizations in over 30 countries, with financial and in-kind support coming from Global GF Sponsoring companies and institutions.
GGF efforts are also aimed at the development of a broadly based Integrated Grid Architecture that can serve to guide the research, development, and deployment activities of the emerging Grid communities. Defining such an architecture will advance the Grid agenda through the broad deployment and adoption of fundamental basic services and by sharing code among different applications with common requirements.
Wide-area distributed computing, or "grid" technologies, provide the foundation to a number of large-scale efforts utilizing the global Internet to build distributed computing and communications infrastructures. As common Grid services and interoperable components emerge, the difficulty in undertaking these large-scale efforts will be greatly reduced and, as importantly, the resulting systems will better support interoperation.
GGF3 will be involve a full program that includes general information tracks, tutorials, and sessions for GGF working groups and research groups to work.
The workshop will begin on Sunday evening at the Aldrovandi Hotel Palace in Rome with an orientation session for newcommers, where they will learn about the objectives, structure, and processes of Global Grid Forum. This orientation session will prepare the newcomer to immediately benefit from- and contribute to- the workshop.
Monday morning is dedicated to providing a comprehensive update on the work and status of each working group and research group in Global Grid Forum. Beginning Monday afternoon and running through Wednesday morning, GGF3 will run in three general tracks: Information & Updates, Tutorials, and Work-Sessions. The Information & Updates track will include general interest talks and panels on grid applications, technologies, and testbeds. The Tutorials track will begin with an in-depth look at grids and grid technologies and will continue with 1-3 hour tutorials on a variety of grid technology areas (e.g. LDAP, XML) and projects (e.g. Condor, Globus, Legion, Ninf, UniCore). The Work-Sessions track will consist of at least four parallel sessions where GGF working groups and research groups will be engaged in developing and discussing Grid Working Drafts ranging from technology surveys to technical specifications. These sessions are open to all participants.
There will be organized transportation to Rome on Monday evening for small group dinners, and a conference dinner on Tuesday evening at Le Ville Tuscolana.
