The University of Art and Design Basel, HGK Basel, offers four one-week summer workshops on the theme of visual communication and interactive media for students, professional graphic designers and artists internationally. The workshops enable an insight into topical themes in visual communication and interactive media in a contemporary study program influenced by the rich tradition of the Basel School of Design. Practical assignments with a high professional standard form the core of the workshops'focus. For reflection on the work, contextual knowledge will be conveyed through input sessions, thus allowing individual student work to be judged within a contemporary, future-oriented environment relevant to professional practice.

The meaningful combination of design and technology is an ongoing challenge in the field of visual communication and art. The success or failure of combining the two areas has an increasing impact on everyone's lives, since we access more and more information through a graphic user interface. The workshop will introduce design students, professional designers and artists to the possibilities of interaction design. In the first phase of the workshop participants learn to design the interaction with the computer by using Flash Action Script. This will enable students to invent and realize concepts of interaction design, which go beyond the standardized methods in use around the world. This knowledge is the basis of an innovative approach to design in this new medium. In the second phase of the workshop the students will go through the stages of developing an interface for a web-site, from the conceptual stages, to the design, to the realization and publication in the WorldWideWeb. During input sessions, examples from the field of interaction design will be reflected upon and discussed.
