South East Asia, today, is one of the fastest developing economies in the world - with a GDP growth in 2004 reaching 5.9%. European companies are the biggest investors in the ASEAN, and the EU is the 3rd largest trading partner to ASEAN countries.
In July 2003, the European Commission adopted a Communication on a "New Partnership with South East Asia", setting out a comprehensive strategy for future EU relations with the region including a comprehensive regional dialogue on the different aspects of the Information Society, co-operation towards interconnection and interoperability of European Union and South East Asian networks and services and promotion of joint projects for research in ICT and industrial applications in electronic communications.
Commissioner Reding will jointly open EUSEA2006 on June 19th with the ministry of Information Communication & Arts (MICA) in Singapore.
EUSEA2006 objectives are to offer an open ICT co-operation platform for South East Asians and Europeans through business, regulatory and research co-operation and through strengthening external relations policy.
EUSEA2006 will create ICT exposure between European & South-East Asian governments, industries, academics and researchers as well as allowing access to best technological know-how & skilled researchers worldwide. EUSEA2006 aims to strengthen a broader cooperation for the future composed of a two-day conference and four-day exhibition, offering opportunities for:
- An open business platform between key stakeholders from Europe and Southeast Asia
- A policy and regulatory dialogue on ICT
- Reinforcing the realization of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) objectives in Southeast Asia
- ICT research co-operation projects between Europe and Southeast Asia
- Networking meetings between European and Southeast Asian participants
- Training for participants through ICT workshops and hands-on courses
The EUSEA2006 conference and exhibition will take place in Singapore during the imbX event (http://www.visit-imbx.com/).
The plenary & parallel sessions, technological training and networking meetings will take place at the Shangri-La Hotel & Convention Centre located in downtown Singapore from 19th - 20th June 2006 with a networking pre-event on Sunday 18th June 2006.
The EUSEA2006 exhibition will be held within the CommunicAsia2006 exhibition at Singapore Expo from 20th - 23rd June 2006.
