Unforgiving Memory
18/07/2001

Banff New Media Institute

On behalf of Sara Diamond, Artistic Director Media Visual Arts, Executive Producer of The Banff New Media Institute, The Banff Centre for the Arts, we are inviting you to come and present at our forthcoming Banff New Media Institute Summit, "Unforgiving Memory" which will be held on August 23-25. We feel that your participation in this international summit will offer a unique and valuable contribution to the on-going dialogue and network we promote.

The event's description is as follows:
As historical, cultural, economic, and personal memories become increasingly digitized and networked this Summit examines the ways that digital assets can be gathered, mapped, and visualized. We will tackle some of the hard problems of deep database repository development, metadata organization and standards, then move on to consider strategies for making data meaningful, in particular through visualization. We will explore how software engineers, computer scientists, artists, designers, and broadcasters meet the challenge of making the wide range of digital assets accessible to users. What role do intelligent agents and bots play in the world of data navigation beyond the search engine? Where are neural networks valuable? What strategies can the entertainment and educational sectors employ to make information meaningful? Who has the right to access your data? What are appropriate security systems? What do students need to know in order to become effective researchers? When is it appropriate to use organic metaphors and self-organizing systems to think through information organization? What platforms require what kinds of navigation tools (broadband, wireless)? Themes include Agents, Intelligent Characters, Smart Technologies, Design and Nanotechnologies, Servers, Data Base Aesthetics, Visualization and New Forms of Narrative. This Summit is of critical value to producers, directors and distributors.

The Banff New Media Institute (BNMI) designs and delivers leading-edge seminars, think tanks, summits and workshops for producers, designers, artists, writers, directors, software developers, new media content specialists, curators, scientists, educators, researchers and visionaries.

We truly hope that you will be able to participate in The Banff New Media Institute. Please contact Caroline Thebault directly at caroline_thebault@banffcentre.ca if you have any question. Caroline Thebault
